I talked to Matt Butcher on the phone a few January's ago.  He told me his next album, the soon to be released Ghostwriting, would be inspired by Souther Gothic Literature.  He reccommended some authors to me.  I picked up a few Cormac McCathy books.  The Road didn't grip me so much, but All the Pretty Horses has become one of my favorite books.  Check out this song, "Liars and Thieves," that channels the storytelling of the Southern Gothic genre.
